He works peacefully at a slanted writing table, and his lion and dog slumber equally peacefully in the foreground. The engraving of "Saint Jerome In His Study" belongs to a period of fame and artistic productivity, as Dürer the master artist gave full rein to his talents. Although we can usefully compare it to earlier and contemporaneous works, there is much about it which sets it apart. St. Jerome in His Study is an oil on panel painting by German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, completed March 1521.

The lion resting in the workspace is a symbol typically associated with Jerome, as he is reputed to have tamed a lion by removing a thorn from its paw. In Dürer’s engraving Saint Jerome can be seen hard at work, presumably translating the bible into Latin. Saint Jerome (ca. Saint Jerome, who translated the Bible into Latin from the original Greek and Hebrew, is shown reading in his study. It is in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga of Lisbon , Portugal… 347-420 CE) was one of the four Latin Fathers of the Church (the others being Saint Augustine, Ambrose, and Gregory the Great) and renowned for his learning, distilled in his translation of the Bible into Latin. The work portrays the traditional episode of Saint Jerome appearing to St. Augustine to announce his imminent death and departure to Heaven. Saint Jerome, translator of the Bible into Latin (the Vulgate) and thus the exemplar of the Christian scholar, is seated in a typical study of Dürer's day.

Carpaccio portrayed the African saint in his studio, in the moment in which he is distracted from his reading by the voice of Jerome, coming as a luminous shape in the window near the desk. The image of the saint in his study was popular during the 1400s, especially with scholars and men of the Church.

He is surrounded by books, an inkwell, an unlit candle and a crucifix (which seems not to be attached to the desk and may be a vision).
